So what I want is to run an ethernet cable directly from my desktop client, straight into the 2.5Gb port in the proxmox computer, which should let me circumvent the router, and run at 1Gb (since the computer I'm transferring from can only go that fast). The 1Gb is connect to my router, since I only get 1Gb from RCN and nothing can take advantage of the 2.5Gb connection (long term plan is to create an internal network that runs off the 2.5Gb port but for now I just have one question) The motherboard (MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk) on my server has 2 LAN ports, one for 1Gb, and one for 2.5Gb. It's a boring ISP provided modem router combo, which is in the plans to be replaced, but that's for later. I have about a TB of media on my desktop computer I want to move over, but doing it over the wifi is both slow, and seems to grind my router to a halt and kills the internet for everyone in the house, even when I stop the transfer, forcing a reset of the router/modem. I'm very new to this, but I currently have proxmox 7.4 installed, and have TrueNAS running with a couple of pools, one of which is for my media library. Regarding the NAS operating system, would you go for TrueNas or Unraid? What would you recommend? Just buy a new Synology or go for the DIY old PC NAS? So I started thinking if I should turn the PC into a NAS and if it would make a fast and responsive server to work off and it would even be better specced and cheaper option than a new Synology DS1823xs+ I've got a 4 year old PC lying around that I recently got the idea that I can turn the PC into a NAS and the only thing I'd need to buy are the NAS harddrives drives. So my hopes are that a faster processor, more RAM and SSD cache would make it more responsive and easier to work off directly. I saw Synology recently released a the DS1823xs+ which has 10gbe connection and support for nvme ssd cache.

So I'm looking to upgrade at some point (also the drives are filling up soon). It's great for archiving and simple file transfers, but I find it often lagging when I'm working directly off it.

I work with photography and film-making and currently own a Synology ds1819 which I connect to my computer using a 10gbe connection.
